in Cooperation with CWC

CWC is fiscal agent for Taos C.A.R.E.S. (Community Action Resource Enhancement Strategies), a comprehensive county-wide health coalition that assesses community needs and strengths, particularly focusing on 6 community identified priorities: Substance Abuse, Violence, Poverty, Access to Health Care, Teen Pregnancy and Obesity/Nutrition. The mission of C.A.R.E.S. is to enhance collaboration and funding to improve the health, wellness and quality of life in Taos County. C.A.R.E.S. meets monthly to network, share information on emerging data and resources, plan for systems change and highlight new and developing programs in the community. C.A.R.E.S. also disseminates information on funding around the priority areas and produces the Taos County Community Health Profile, a report containing data, trends and narrative on health and wellness in Taos County. Open meetings are held at the Kit Carson Electric Cooperative Boardroom on the second Wednesday of each month from 8:30-10 am. Contact CWC at 505-758-9343 for agenda. C.A.R.E.S. is funded through a contract between the Department of Health, Office of Health Promotion, Community Health Improvement division and CWC.

CWC is also fiscal agent for Clean Air Works in Taos County. With funding from the New Mexico Department of Health's Tobacco use Prevention and Control Program (TUPAC) and donations, Clean Air Works in Taos County improves health by reducing exposure to tobacco. Staff and volunteers offer:
• adult tobacco prevention coalition that focuses on creating smokefree public places
• campaign to educate the community about the importance of avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke including interactive displays at community events and presentations to community or professional groups
• assistance to businesses and public places to establish smokefree worksite policies, and
• efforts to reduce tobacco-related disease and death that affects certain population groups disproportionately, including young adults, rural and low-income individuals, and individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender
