Our Mission
The Community Wellness Center is dedicated to promoting healthy behaviors in Taos County youth through effective health education programs that meet the challenges of unintended teen pregnancy while inspiring youth to achieve their personal best.
Defining the Urgency
NEW MEXICO has the third highest occurrence of adolescent pregnancy of all states in the Nation.
Adolescent pregnancy rates can be reduced through sustained community-wide efforts that involve youth and families, proven interventions and advocacy.
Since 2000, the Community Wellness Center has served over 680 youth. In 2003 - 2004, CWC will teach 426 youth in 6 schools throughout Taos County.
Programs and Services address three areas:
- Reproductive Health
- Youth Development
- Effective Parenting
Teen mothers will earn less than half of the lifetime earnings of a woman who waits until at least age 20 to have a child.
Program Goals:
- Prevention is a powerful tool of good health care.
- An unintended pregnancy is a serious complication to youth realizing their dreams.
- An intended pregnancy includes the joy of bringing new life into the world, but an unintended pregnancy involves the risk of low birth-weight babies and interrupted opportunities for continuing education.
- The quality of life of a teen mother is enhanced by continuing education in reproductive health and parenting.
- All youth need evidence-based reproductive health education to make healthy choices.
- With guidance and motivation, young girls will develop their self-esteem and personal potential.
