
PREVENTION PROGRAMS
Since its inception as the Taos County Maternal and Child Health Council in 1993, CWC has served as a hub for health education and youth development in Taos County. Reducing the rate of teen pregnancy in Taos County is one of the most strategic and direct means available to improve overall child well-being and, in particular, to reduce persistent child poverty. We believe that adolescent pregnancy rates can be reduced through sustained community-wide efforts that involve youth and families, proven interventions and advocacy.
CWC programs seek to reduce the number of teen pregnancies, decrease the rate of STDs/HIV, and foster youth empowerment and leadership in Taos County. In the past year, over 500 Taos County youth have benefited from our teen pregnancy prevention programs:

Age-appropriate evidence based reproductive health education delivered in the schools, youth development programs, and Male Involvement projects;

An after-school and summer youth development program for middle-school girls;
![]()
Advocacy and support for teen moms to delay a second pregnancy and complete an education.
